August is here, which means school all across the country will be starting back up this month. Whether you have children in school or not, we all need to focus on our back-to-school driving safety. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Look out for children. In addition to more traffic on the road during the schoolyear, there will be kids walking and riding their bikes to school. Kids don’t always act the way we expect them to, so be sure to be extra cautious when you see kids on the sidewalks. If kids come out in the street in front of you, give them plenty of space and don’t act angrily toward them.
Obey school bus laws. Here in Indiana, all drivers are required to stop for a school bus that has its lights flashing and stop arm extended, no matter which direction you are travelling. Don’t speed around a school bus as it’s nearing a stop; a child could step out into the road early to cross.
Follow school zone rules. If your daily commute includes driving past a school, you know that you have to slow down during certain times of the day and deal with parents coming and going. If this frustrates you, consider leaving earlier or later so you don’t have to worry about school zone traffic.
If you need a safe, reliable vehicle for your family, consider an SAV® from BMW of Fort Wayne.
